How Do You Start Rotational Grazing on 1–5 Acres?
Quick answer: Divide the pasture into paddocks with the extension formula: (rest days ÷ grazing days) + 1. A typical 30-day rest with 3-day moves gives you 11 paddocks; 5-day moves give you 7. Fence the perimeter properly, then subdivide it with cheap, movable polywire on step-in posts. One 1,640 ft roll covers most small pastures, and the move itself settles into a 20-minute routine.
By August you can tell the two systems apart from the road. One pasture is grazed flat and losing ground to weeds. The other is in stripes, with grass standing tall wherever the animals haven't been for a month.
Rotational grazing is what produces the second one, and it's unusual in farming for a practice to improve so many things at once: forage per acre, parasite pressure, manure distribution, drought resilience. - Grazing trigger heights: turn animals in when forage hits about 8–10 inches and pull them off at roughly 3–4 inches of residual. "Take half, leave half" is the folk version and it's sound. That residual leaf is the solar panel paying for the regrowth.

Two things worth saying plainly about small acreage.
Shorter grazing periods are better for the grass and better for parasite management, but only if you actually keep to them. A 7-paddock system you run faithfully beats an 11-paddock system you quit in July. The hard part of rotational grazing was never the fence. It's the schedule.
And on 1–2 acres with a horse or a few goats, the paddocks get small. That's fine. Small paddocks grazed briefly are the entire point of the exercise.
How much polywire and how many posts should I buy?
Shopping math for a roughly square field. Adjust for your own shape:

The best design tip in NRCS layout guidance is to build a permanent or semi-permanent spine: the perimeter plus one central lane or backbone wire. Hang your short, movable polywire cross-fences off that. Interior strand counts for trained animals: one strand for cattle and horses, two for goats, sheep and mixed groups. - Can I rotationally graze one horse on one acre?
Yes. Split it into 4–6 small paddocks and move every few days. On acreage that tight the goal changes from maximum forage to keeping the pasture alive and the parasites down, so expect to feed hay alongside it and keep a sacrifice paddock for wet spells.
- How big should each paddock be?

- Do I need a separate energizer for interior fences?
