Why not just use household wire?

Because it fails at fence voltage. Insulation rated for 120 V mains has nothing to do with the tens of thousands of volts a fence energizer puts out, and the failure is usually invisible — a slow leak at the connection rather than a spark you'd notice.

How many ground rods do I need?

At least three galvanized rods, 6 ft deep, 10 ft or more apart, for energizers up to 15 joules. Five up to 25 joules, seven up to 35. The bundle includes one rod, so plan on buying two more locally.

What's the weak point?

The ring terminals. One three-star reviewer put it plainly — the clips are excellent, the terminal eyes are not what you're paying for. If your energizer uses ring terminals, use its own hardware and keep these for the clip end.

Do I need a second set?

If your conductor pack has three or more joins, an extra set is cheap insurance. More rolls means more splices, and splices want proper clamps rather than a knot.
