Polywire vs Polytape vs Polybraid: Which Electric Fence Conductor Do You Need?
Quick answer: Use polytape where visibility is the priority: horses, goats, any fence people walk past. Use polybraid rope on perimeters that stay put and take abuse, at 900 lb break strength and the lowest resistance of the three. Use polywire when you move fence constantly and want cheap footage that reels without fighting you. Same energizer, same posts. Only the conductor changes.
All three are one idea built three ways. Fine metal filaments run through a UV-stabilized polyethylene carrier; the plastic holds the shape and takes the tension, the metal carries the pulse. What separates them is geometry: width, strand count, metal type, break strength. Price per foot is the easiest of those numbers to shop on, and it's the one that tells you least.
What is the difference between polywire, polytape, and polybraid?
Polywire is the thin one. Roughly 1/8" in diameter, 6–9 metal strands twisted into a poly cord. Cheapest per foot, lightest, winds onto a reel without complaint, which is why it owns rotational and strip grazing. Its weakness is that a thin cord vanishes at distance, to animals and to people both. That's the whole reason decent polywire comes in high-contrast colors.
Polytape is a flat ribbon, commonly 1/2" to 2" wide, conductors woven along its length. Nothing else in the category is as easy to see, so tape is the standard answer for horses. You pay for that width twice. A ribbon catches wind, and wind loads your posts and fatigues the tape season after season. Tape also needs real tape connectors at every join. Tie a knot in it and you've joined plastic to plastic, not metal to metal.
Polybraid rope (polyrope, depending on who's selling it) is a braided cord around 1/4" in diameter. More visible than polywire, far calmer in wind than tape, and much stronger, because a braid simply has more material in it. Grazeline's polybraid breaks at 900 lb. Polywire and 3/4" tape sit in the 330 lb class. Rope is what horse owners buy for the perimeter they don't intend to move again.

Which conductor is best for horses?
Tape or rope — and the reason is the horse's eye, not the electricity.
Research summarized by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's Horse Report shows horses are dichromats: they see the world in roughly blues and yellows, and they cannot pick red out of it the way we do. A 2007 behavioral study (Hanggi, Ingersoll & Waggoner) confirmed that horses reliably tell blue and yellow from gray, while red and green blur toward gray-green.
Which means a thin, dull wire is close to invisible to a horse at a canter. A wide or thick conductor in white, neon yellow, and blue sits in the part of the spectrum their eyes actually register, and it turns into a boundary they see coming and learn to leave alone. The shock teaches the lesson. The visibility is what keeps reminding them of it afterward.
Between tape and rope for horses:
- Polytape if you want the most visibility for the least money, somewhere sheltered.
- Polybraid rope if the run is long, more or less permanent, exposed to wind, or likely to take a hit. One Grazeline customer put it plainly: "if an animal were ever to get tangled up in it it would not cut or injure them; if a branch or tree fell on it, it'd be fine." A 900 lb braid absorbs a spooked horse or a falling limb in a way steel wire never safely does.
If the budget stretches, rope the perimeter and tape the interior divisions. It costs a few cents a foot more and it's the version we'd argue for.

Which conductor is best for rotational grazing?
Polywire, almost without exception. Rotation means moving fence every one to several days, and polywire is the only format that reels, unreels and re-tensions hundreds of times without turning into a chore. It's also the cheapest way to buy distance. Grazeline's 3,280 ft roll runs $69.99, which is about 2 cents per foot.
Two things to check before you buy it:
- Strand count and metal. Cheap 6-strand stainless-only polywire has high resistance, and on a long paddock lead that shows up as a weak tickle instead of a correction. A mixed-metal 9-strand build (Grazeline runs 3 tinned-copper + 6 stainless strands, 0.3 Ω/m) still bites at the far end.
- How it ships. A roll on a proper reel or spool saves real time on a windy afternoon when you're doing it alone. Grazeline ships polywire on a wooden reel for that reason, and at least one customer came out ahead on footage: "it appeared to be longer than stated. When transferring it to a Gallagher reel with a stated capacity of 1,200 metres, I was unable to fit the entire roll."

Which conductor is best for goats, cattle, and mixed livestock?
- Goats test fences constantly and want higher voltage, 4,000–5,000 V per Powerflex's species chart. Polytape for visibility on small paddocks, and take your grounding seriously (the grounding guide).
- Cattle are the easy ones. Trained cattle respect a single polywire strand at 2,000–3,000 V, which is how one reel runs an entire strip-grazing operation.
- Mixed pastures with horses, cattle and farm dogs together lean tape or rope. "Horses, cows, and dogs seem to see it no problem. Nice and flexible. Seems to shock well," one Grazeline polywire buyer reports. Still: if horses are in the mix, buy for the horse.
Does the metal inside the conductor matter as much as the format?
Yes, and it's the spec almost nobody checks. Two rolls can look identical on the shelf and differ by a factor of ten in resistance, depending on whether the filaments are stainless only or include copper. Copper conducts roughly 40 times better than stainless steel of the same diameter; the resistivity numbers are in the copper vs stainless guide.
That's why Grazeline prints the resistance on every roll: 0.1 Ω/m for polybraid, 0.2 Ω/m for polytape, 0.3 Ω/m for polywire, all of them built on tinned-copper conductors.
On a 200 ft garden fence almost anything works. On 1,000 ft of horse perimeter, the metal decides whether the far corner still bites.

Questions people actually ask
- Can I mix polywire, polytape, and polybraid on the same fence?
Yes, and plenty of farms do: a polybraid or polytape perimeter with polywire cross-fencing inside it, all on one energizer. Join the formats with proper metal-to-metal connectors. Tape needs tape connectors, and a knot joins plastic, not conductors.
- Is polytape or polywire better for deer?

- How long do poly conductors last?
Plan on 3–10 years. Construction decides where in that band you land: published manufacturer figures run from a 3-year probable life on a budget-to-mid 1/2" tape (Premier1's IntelliTape) up to a 20-year weathering warranty on a premium one (Powerfields SAFE-FENCE). - Do I need a special energizer for each conductor type?
No. Any modern low-impedance energizer drives all three. Size it to fence length and vegetation load instead: energizer makers' rule of thumb is about one output joule per mile of fence. The conductor type doesn't enter into it.
- Which Grazeline conductor should a first-time fencer buy?
For horses, polytape (1,000 ft, $44.99) in the paddocks and polybraid on the perimeter. For rotational grazing, polywire. If you genuinely can't decide, buy tape. It's the most forgiving place to start: most visible, mid-priced, easy to handle.
