What tools and materials do I need?

With an entry-level energizer, a small paddock usually comes in somewhere around $250–450 all in. That's a fraction of any physical horse fence, and most of it is one-time.

Step 1: How do I plan the fence line?

Walk it before you build it. Flag the corners, note every dip and rise, since strands have to follow the terrain without settling into brush, and put the gate where you already lead horses through. Keep the line out from under branch-dropping trees where you can. Where you can't, that's your argument for a high-break-strength rope.

Settle the strand count now. Two strands hold most trained horses in an interior paddock. Three strands for perimeters, for foals, who will happily graze underneath a single strand, and for mixed herds.

Put the top strand around chest-to-wither height and space the rest evenly below it. Extension fencing guidance works from a simple rule: a hot strand should meet the animal at chest or nose height, because that's where an animal makes first contact anyway.

Step 2: How do I set the posts?

Corners, ends and gate posts do the real work, so set those solidly. Well-tamped wood posts are the beginner-proof choice. Then string a line between corners and set your line posts along it every 12–20 ft. Tape catches wind, so push it toward the closer spacing. Rope and polywire are happy at the wider end.

Here's the part beginners underestimate: because the conductor is light and the barrier is psychological, your posts carry a fraction of the load a physical fence would put on them. That's the whole reason one person with a hand driver can build this.

Clip or screw insulators on at your strand heights. Every point where conductor touches a wood or steel post gets insulated, no exceptions. A single skipped insulator will quietly bleed the entire fence (the troubleshooting guide).

Step 3: How do I install the grounding system? (Do not skip this)

Grounding is half the circuit. The pulse leaves the energizer, runs the fence, passes through the animal into the soil, and has to find its way back through your ground rods to close the loop. It's also the step amateur installs get wrong more than any other. Extension guidance puts about 80% of electric-fence problems down to faulty grounding (UC Cooperative Extension, Grounding Electric Fences).

The extension-standard minimum, per Virginia Tech SPES-691, is three galvanized rods, 6 ft deep, at least 10 ft apart, sunk in soil that stays moist, connected in series with insulated wire and proper ground clamps back to the energizer's ground terminal.

Step 4: How do I run the conductor?

Start at a corner. Tie off tape with a buckle-style tensioner or a wrap-back knot; for rope, use rope tensioners and connectors. Remember that a knot in any poly conductor joins plastic to plastic, so every join and splice needs metal-to-metal hardware. Then walk the roll down the line, dropping the conductor into each insulator as you go.

Tension until the line looks straight with no sag between posts. Snug, not banjo-tight. Buy more than your plan says. Strands sag into dips, wrap corners and double back at terminations. Step 5: How do I connect the energizer and test?

Mount an AC energizer out of the weather, or a solar unit on a post facing the sun. Two connections — fence terminal → conductor, ground terminal → ground rods. Step 6: How do I introduce my horse to the new fence?

First contact should happen at a walk, not at a bolt. Turn the horse out in daylight, in a smaller paddock where the line is obvious, and if you can, let it graze on a lead near the fence first.

Yes, and it's one of the few fence types actually designed for it. Step-in or T-posts, light conductors on reels, low tension throughout: a small paddock is a solo weekend. Long payouts and corner tensioning are the only jobs where a second pair of hands is genuinely nicer.

How many strands of tape or rope do horses need?

Do I need an electrician?
